Gnarls Barkley’s latest effort, The Odd Couple, is even more uncategorizable than their debut release, St. Elsewhere. The duo (DJ Danger Mouse and singer/rapper Cee-Lo Green), have effectively created a new, as-yet unnamed, musical genre.
The difficulty in pulling off such a feat, and its implications, are staggering though controversial. Suffice it to say that to listen to this album is to experience a type of music you have never heard before. So far I’ve been calling it “urban electronic soul,“ but I realize such a designation is practically meaningless.
The Odd Couple is at once current, established, and forward-thinking… and well worth a listen.
